Research Assistant (Volunteer)

Job Description

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Volunteer Research Assistant will conduct country-specific desk research to support Raising The Village’s (RTV) expansion into other sub-Saharan African countries. This initial desk research of 10 sub-Saharan African countries will help with a country analysis and support more-in-depth research of selected countries.  The Volunteer Research Assistant is someone who is passionate about international development and able to self-manage their time and share clear concise notes. This role requires strong research and time management skills, critical and analytical thinking skills, and the ability to be self-motivated and work independently.  

Role & Responsibilities

  • Conduct desk research and literature review using existing and reliable sources to gather information in accordance with our research framework. Scope of research will include information collection and analysis on factors including (but not limited to) demographic, social, economic, political, environmental,  legal & regulatory, international relations & foreign policy, human rights among others. 
  • Record findings by taking written notes
  • Present findings in a clear and concise format
  • Provide evidence-based overview remarks and basic analysis on the feasibility of expansion into the country of research, keeping in view the organizational objectives.

Requirements and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in social sciences or 3-4 years of experience in a relevant field
  • 1+ year of research experience with a research agency or project in a non-profit/international development will be considered a strong asset
  • Demonstrated experience with qualitative research and analysis
  • Strong understanding and awareness of international development
  • Strong computer skills with excellent knowledge of Microsoft Suite
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written English;
  • Attention to detail and strategic thinking
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Representation of volunteers from sub-Saharan African countries will be considered a strong asset
  • Access to Internet and computer for desk research
